Clean Drinking Water for Profit to the Highest Bidder -- Roger Cohn
Originally posted as a Mother Jones editorial It was back in the 1980s, the era of Reagan and Thatcher, that the notion of privatization as the solution to the world's problems began to take hold. The private sector, we were told, could do most things more efficiently than government. And when it came to promoting tourism or running the lottery, that may have been true. But what happens when private companies take over more basic public services, such as providing health care, education, or -- as is increasingly happening around the world -- clean drinking water? For decades we've known the stark truth: the world is running out of fresh water. The dream of large-scale desalinization plants that would convert oceans into reservoirs turned out to be impractical. As global population continues to burgeon, water demand keeps rising. By 2025, demand is expected to exceed supply by more than 50 percent; already, more than a billion people lack access to clean water. [MORE - Water Wars] ![]()

Relevance? Just look at recent headlines. They could be a plot outline for Behind the Green Water by J. M. Taylor; a map for Nash Devon to follow from Saudi to Iraq to the Golan Heights. Timelessness? The underlying conflict began over a thousand years ago, and will probably continue for who knows how long? Behind the Green Water is an adventure, a romance, a political and cultural shocker, in the sense that the reader can feel at home - or uncomfortable, as the case may be - with the people... the story of a Carolinian claiming ancestry back to the Croatan Indians and Sir Walter Raleigh's Lost Colony. Devon had been hailed as a hero and damned as a murderer in the Gulf War, then haunted over the years by his actions. Assigned back to Saudi enroute to the UN weapons inspection team in Iraq, Devon is shanghaied by US military intelligence and sent to the Northern Iraq Sanctuary Zone for duty with the UN High Commission for Refugees as an agricultural advisor. Devon's mission is to locate a hidden Iraqi nuclear research facility. In his search Devon discovers more than he bargained for: a nuclear conspiracy and an opportunity to have the family he thought he had lost forever as Renee Granwin deciphers the riddle of a tablet with an encrypted message... We join with our Israeli colleagues in calling for vigilance as events unfold in Israel and the Occupied Territories. With an average of more than $10 million dollars per day of American tax dollars going to Israel, we believe Americans cannot remain silent while crimes as abhorrent as ethnic cleansing are being openly advocated. We urge our government to communicate clearly to the government of Israel that the expulsion of people according to race, religion or nationality would constitute crimes against humanity and will not be tolerated. Down memory lane...
Enron Papers Show Manipulation of California Crisis Enron manipulated the California electricity market with such maneuvers as transferring energy outside the state to evade price caps and creating phony "congestion" on power lines, according to internal Enron documents. -- [FULL STORY] 25JAN2001 Enron makes big money off California energy crisis One of the biggest beneficiaries of the California power crisis is a Texas energy conglomerate that more than any other single company has helped bankroll President Bush's political career. Enron Corporation of Houston is among a handful of a new generation of independent electric power brokers and producers that have reaped giant revenue increases from California's power shortages and higher natural gas prices nationwide. According to the January 2001 AP report. "Right behind Enron in campaign contributions from energy companies was Atlanta based Southern Co., whose Southern Energy subsidiary, recently renamed Mirant, is an electricity supplier in California." The 21JAN2002 edition of Time features Enron Spoils the Party - Bush wants his State of the Union speech to drown out those stories linking Enron and the White House; an extensive article by Michael Duffy and John Dickerson, with reporting by Cathy Booth Thomas (Dallas), and Karen Tumulty and Michael Weisskopf (Washington).
